Rybinsk in Yaroslavl Oblast was the birthplace of brothers Joseph and Nicholas Schenck. After emigratation to the USA, Joseph eventually controlled 20th Century Fox and Nicholas controlled MGM Our Yaroslavl friends made a return visit here in the summer. From June to August 1831, Grand Duchess Helene of Russia, sister in law of the Tsar, rented No. 8 for herself and No. 7 for her entourage. She was accompanied during her stay by Counts Tolstoy and Gagarin and the Countess Nesslerode. Her staff of over 100 included a Russian band who, resplendent in tunics of her household, played outside on the terrace. The visit is commemorated by the double-headed eagle, symbol of Imperial Russia, on the central pediment.
