Russian Xmas Fayre - Saturday, December 10 2016

Sam, a young visitor to our Russian Xmas Fayre meets the Russian BearOur Russian Xmas Fayre at Exeter Guildhall was a grand sucess, the result of excellent team work by many members. We were very pleased and encouraged by other members and friends who dropped in to see us, as well all those busy Exeter shoppers. Takings were substantially up on last year's. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a pleasant and successful event.

Express and Echo, our local newspaper reported on the event as follows:

Twinning Fair

The Exeter Yaroslavl Twinning Association held its annual Christmas Fair in the Guildhall on Saturday. The atmosphere was enlivended by Russian Music and the singing and ukelele playing of local groups who were performing to raise money for the Lord Mayor's Charity, the Devon Freewheelers. The event was a chance for people to buy Christmas presents and learn more about the association, which organises an annual visit to Exeter's twin town of Yaroslavl. More information can be found at www.eyta.org.uk

RUSSIAN “ BEREGINYA” DOLLS - held on Saturday 3rd December

Russian Bereginya Dolls

Elena Coles led a workshop at her home, giving us the opportunity to make Russian "Bereginya Dolls". These are traditional talisman dolls which were made by women from scraps of worn out fabric to amuse and protect their children, bring prosperity, happiness and joy to the life of the family, protect and heal their folk and home and get “magical” help with house chores, crafts and harvest. Traditionally the dolls are made without the use of scissors or needles . The red thread is used magically for protection and the number of knots and ties have symbolic meaning. The dolls haven’t got facial features, so that evil spirits cannot enter them through eyes or mouth, but each one of them has its own character, purpose and story.

We plan to hold further sessions soon. If you are interested in attending, please let us know. It may be possible to arrange lifts, please ask - Contact us
